For the next 6 months, my friend Anna and I will be traveling the Great Circle, which is defined as the circumference of the Earth as it moves through the Equator. Starting off in Southeast Asia and moving our way towards Latin America, we will use all methods of transportation available, from the usual planes, trains and automobiles to the time-honored traditions of boat and foot.
Today's world is turbulent, and the growing uncertainties that seem to dominate the news, such as the economy, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the fighting in Kenya and Lebanon, and the failings of our political leaders, both personal and professional, can create the need for individuals to try to isolate from the rest of the world and pretend it doesn't exist. This isn't possible, as our futures, not just in the West but throughout the world, are dependent on each other. As such, our goal for this trip is to be more than observers of cultures, but to interact in a real way with the people we meet, and to fully experience the different cultures that we encounter. As Westerners, we realize that our perception of the world, and our place in it, is much different than that of others, and we seek to not only experience different ways of life, but hope to change our own perceptions of who and what we are. Further, we hope to bring this new awakening to our fellow countrymen back home, to hopefully bring the world to them through this web site, so that those who can't come with us can still participate in the journey.
Over the next few weeks, we will be finishing this web site to make it a more interactive experience. We will have a blog that we will update as much as possible, along with pictures that we have taken along our journey. As our goal is as much to inform you as it is to better ourselves, please e-mail us if you have any questions, or requests for the type of material that you would like to see posted!
